As early as 1400, Abbot Allibert noted the existence in Pompiery of “a pious foundation benefiting from considerable revenues” !
Around 1500, the same author says that the former oratory grew in size and became a church and a presbytery was built for a priest to live in.
During the Wars of Religion, the church and presbytery were destroyed. In 1600, a new chapel was built and soon extended, but it was not until 1656 that a priest settled in.
In 1696, the vault fell down and the church was prohibited from worship until the reconstruction of a new vault five years later. In 1751, it was noticed how urgent it was to get repairs done… nothing happened and the bell tower collapsed in 1760,resulting in teh prohibition of religious services. After repairs were carried out, the church remained standing until 1874 when again, the bishop threatened to close if the church was not rebuilt. Thus, it was abandoned and became a ruin. A new church was built in 1876. The bell tower, separated from the church, adjacent to the presbytery, rose in 1841.
The church is dedicated to Saint Anne who is celebrated on 26 July.
