Chapelle Sainte Marie Madeleine à Villaudemard

Chapelle Sainte Marie Madeleine à Villaudemard

The building is perfectly oriented indicating that its construction corresponds to the village renewal. The dedication to Mary Magdalene reinforces this dating, the worship to this saint having begun to develop during the 12th century.

Villaudemard is most probably a carolingian foundation and the name “Audemar” is an anthroponym of germanic origin : it must be a carolingian courtyard or villa with a place of worship. It was apparently deserted during the dark ages, in the 10th century, with the hamlet of Vierard adjoined to Villaudemard by the Napoleonian cadastre. The village went back to its course during the second millennium. It became the capital of a small community with a place of worship and a cemetery. Even though registers mention deeds from 1735 to 1792, the Cassini map (1779) doesn’t mention the village but a chapel dedicated to Saint Mark.
